Abstract
Dans ses tableaux urbains, Mercier jette un regard analytique sur le peuple de Paris, dont il cherche à saisir les mœurs et à décrire les conditions de vie. Loin d’être une entité stable, le peuple apparaît comme une instance problématique, traversée de clivages et sans cesse recomposée. La Révolution accentue ces divisions en présentant au regard de l’historien-promeneur deux formes d’engagement populaire, correspondant à deux moments de l’histoire révolutionnaire, à deux registres émotifs et à deux modes d’appréhension du temps historique. D’un côté, le peuple héroïque de 1789 se caractérise par son unité, par la spontanéité de son action, par son engagement non médié et par son enthousiasme confiant. De l’autre, le peuple-traître de 1793 est le fruit des divisions internes et du désordre émotif : manipulé par les Jacobins, il n’est pas pleinement agent et puise son énergie dans une colère incontrôlée qui dégénère en fureur. Ainsi Mercier appelle à se méfier du registre émotif qui fonde le discours de la Terreur et prône un retour à la raison.
