Les scandales de corruption réduisent-ils le pouvoir politique des grandes entreprises ? Les réactions de la presse et des gouvernements aux enquêtes et accusations de corruption concernant SNC Lavalin montrent que malgré toutes les mauvaises nouvelles, la firme a bénéficié de décisions lui permettant d’éviter une reconnaissance de culpabilité et de préserver ses contrats publics. Pour expliquer ces résultats, l’hypothèse du nationalisme économique comme « cadre » est soumise à l’examen. Lorsque les sanctions pour punir les entreprises visées par la corruption sont cadrées comme des coûts qui menacent l’économie nationale, le bruit autour de la corruption importe peu. Il est neutralisé par le nationalisme économique, que les dirigeants de firmes mobilisent pour construire des coalitions de soutien en faveur de règles anticorruption qui ne désavantagent pas « nos entreprises » par rapport à leurs concurrents étrangers.
