En 1840, un Eugène Sue en proie à de graves difficultés financières multiplie les projets dans l'espoir d'arriver à redresser le navire de ses fortunes.L'auteur de Plik et Plok, d'Atar-Gull, de la frénétique Salamandre ou encore de La Vigie de Koat-Ven n'est guère un inconnu dans le monde de la littérature.On le considère même comme l'inventeur du roman maritime, mais ses succès de public ne sont pas suffisants pour obtenir une sécurité financière qui s'obstine à demeurer hors d'atteinte.On ne corrige pas du jour au lendemain les conséquences de longues années marquées par un rapport pour le moins insouciant avec l'argent.Sue ne peut se passer d'un certain train de vie, que les contingences ne lui permettent guère.Sa plume va se charger de rétablir l'équilibre.Les manuscrits s'accumulent, les romans sortent en librairie à un rythme soutenu.Examinant sa production, Sue pourra se féliciter, en 1841, d'avoir « fait 8 volumes et dix actes en un an » (xiii).Perdues au milieu de cette effervescence littéraire, juste avant la publication, en décembre de la même année et toujours dans La Presse, de Matilde, qui aura bien autrement de succès, viennent ces Aventures d'Hercule Hardi que nous repropose maintenant Jean-Pierre Galvan, reprenant le texte tel que publié dans La Revue des feuilletons en 1844, avec ses illustrations.
