Il existait à Marseille, en 1829, la congrégation des Sœurs des Saints Noms de Jésus et de Marie dont le but était l’éducation des « jeunes personnes de leur sexe et surtout des pauvres filles des bourgs, des villages et de la campagne ». La communauté provençale fut invitée par Mgr Eugène de Mazenod de Marseille à envoyer des sujets au Canada, mais faute de sujets, déclina l’offre.
