Abstract
Depuis 1981, les différentes campagnes de prospection menées par Luc Long (Drassm) au large des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer ont permis de recenser 39 épaves antiques. De cette concentration exceptionnelle d’épaves, une spécificité très singulière commence à apparaître : à proximité de l’ancienne embouchure du Rhône Saint-Ferréol cet inventaire regroupe en effet exclusivement des gisements composés de matières premières. On enregistre ainsi, pour le Haut-Empire, pas moins de trente épaves chargées de plomb, de fer, d’étain, de cuivre, de bronze, de marbre et de bois. Aucune épave chargée d’amphores n’est attestée alors que pour cette période des millions d’individus ont transité par l’axe rhodanien. Face à ce constat très étonnant, cet article envisage l’hypothèse que le Rhône Saint-Ferréol était une embouchure spécialisée dans la circulation des matières premières. En partant de ce postulat, les problématiques soulevées imposent que notre regard, fixé jusqu'à présent exclusivement sur les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, s’élargisse à l’échelle du delta du Rhône.
