La dépendance de l’économie canadienne à l’égard de son commerce avec les États-Unis fait depuis longtemps l'objet de discussions (Beaulieu et Song, 2015), et le débat a récemment été relancé par la crise du coronavirus et la renégociation de l’ALENA. Une statistique clé souvent utilisée pour mesurer cette dépendance est que plus de la moitié des importations canadiennes proviennent des États-Unis. Nous montrons ici que la dépendance du Canada à l’égard des États-Unis est encore plus grande que ce que l’on pense habituellement. En examinant les données enregistrant la valeur des importations canadiennes par produit, pays de production, pays exportateur et mode de transport, nous montrons que les États-Unis sont non seulement le principal fournisseur du Canada, mais aussi un centre logistique essentiel pour les importations canadiennes qui ne sont pas produites aux États-Unis. La moitié des marchandises importées de fournisseurs non américains entrent au Canada par la frontière entre les États-Unis et le Canada. Au total, environ 80 % des importations canadiennes sont liées aux États-Unis, soit parce que les marchandises y sont produites, soit parce que les marchandises traversent les États-Unis pour entrer au Canada.
