Abstract
O diabetes mellitus é uma doença crônica cuja prevalência vem aumentando mundialmente. Os custos do seu tratamento são altíssimos e poderiam ser reduzidos com a adoção de práticas preventivas tanto no controle dietético quanto na adoção de hábitos saudáveis como não fumar, ingestão de bebidas alcoólicas, drogas, entre outras. A prática odontológica é afetada pela doença, seja nos cuidados específicos ao se realizar procedimentos invasivos, na melhora do controle glicêmico por meio da redução de processos inflamatórios ou até no possível auxílio no diagnóstico de quadros de pré-diabetes pelo cirurgião dentista. Por isso o cirurgião-dentista deve estar sempre bem informado sobre os avanços científicos sobre o controle do diabetes e sobre as possíveis complicações inerentes à instalação da doença periodontal e da cárie dentária dentre outras afecções da cavidade bucal. Tendo esses fatores em vista, esse artigo é uma revisão narrativa da literatura que aborda as principais e mais recentes classificações da doença, assim como suas implicações na prática odontológica.
