Abstract
Le mouvement d’opposition à la loi sur la voirie de 1796 au Bas-Canada s’est produit alors que la Grande-Bretagne, dont dépend la colonie depuis 1760, et la France, ancienne mère-patrie de la majorité des habitants, sont en guerre. Les historiens ont généralement mis l’accent sur ce contexte et sur certains gestes spectaculaires posés par les opposants à la loi. Cet article propose de tenir compte du processus politique (parlementaire et électoral), des actions collectives et des suites de ce mouvement. Bien que l’opposition soit fermement réprimée, les opposants réussissent à faire amender la loi pour en retirer les articles les plus inéquitables.
