Abstract
L’abolition des Corn Laws par la Grande Bretagne en 1846 porte un coup dur à l’économie de la province du Canada, affectant les marchands et les agriculteurs qui bénéficiaient de tarifs préférentiels pour le commerce des céréales grâce à ces lois protectionnistes. C’est dans ce contexte que deux petits pichets de céramique commémorant le rappel des Corn Laws au Parlement de Westminster se sont retrouvés au Parlement qui siégeait à Montréal entre 1844 et 1849. La découverte de ces pichets en 2017 par une équipe d’archéologues, sous la direction de Pointe-à-Callière, cité d’archéologie et d’histoire de Montréal, offre l’occasion de relire ce moment charnière de notre histoire politique et économique. Les pichets évoquent la victoire triomphale de l’Anti-Corn Law League sous la conduite de Richard Cobden et de Sir Robert Peel. Enfin, le texte souligne l’influence de la League et de ses méthodes de marketing populaire sur une association de marchands montréalais, ce qui expliquerait, peut-être, la présence des pichets au Parlement du Canada à Montréal.
