Abstract
Management of acid mine drainage generating tailings is an important issue for operating mines. An integrated tailings management scenario was proposed to reduce the costs associated with tailings management by, among others, the re-use of concentrator tailings. A sulphide flotation circuit placed before the concentrator tailings disposal in the tailings impoundment would produce a sulphide-rich concentrate and desulphurized (low sulphide) tailings. The concentrate could be used as a component of cemented paste backfill and returned underground for ground support. The low sulphide tailings, non acid generating, could be used as cover material to be placed over potentially acid-generating tailings storage areas. The article summarizes laboratory work on the application of integrated tailings management for Doyon mine. Pilot scale tests confirmed the feasibility of tailings desulphurization by flotation. A sulphide recovery of approximately 95% was achieved with amine collectors (insensitive to cyanide); the flotation tailings having approximately 0.3%S. The impact of the addition of sulphide concentrate into paste backfill was evaluated, and results confirmed that there is even a positive impact on mechanical strength. Leaching tests performed on paste backfill showed that paste made with sulphide tailings has a similar environmental behaviour as paste made with total tailings (before desulphurization). Finally, laboratory work confirmed that desulphurized tailings used as cover material over acid generating tailings can prevent the production of acid mine drainage. La gestion de résidus miniers générateurs de drainage minier acide est un aspect important dans une opération minière. Une gestion intégrée des résidus a été proposée ; ce type de gestion permet, entre autres, la réutilisation des rejets du concentrateur. Ainsi, un circuit de flottation place avant que le rejet du concentrateur chemine vers le parc à résidus permettrait de concentrer les minéraux sulfureux du rejet pour produire un concentré de sulfures et un rejet désulfuré. Le concentré de sulfures serait ensuite utilise dans la préparation de remblai cimenté en pâte et retourne sous terre comme support de terrain. Les rejets désulfures, n’étant plus générateurs d’acide, peuvent être utilises comme matériaux de recouvrement pour les aires d’entreposage ou on retrouve des résidus potentiellement générateurs de DMA. Cet article résume les travaux effectués en laboratoire visant à appliquer une gestion intégrée des résidus à la mine Doyon. Des essais en usine pilote ont permis de démontrer, en continu, la faisabilité du procédé de désulfuration par flottation. En effet, une récupération de sulfures d’environ 95 % a été obtenue en utilisant des amines comme collecteur (indiffèrent à la présence de cyanures), le rejet de flottation ayant approximativement 0,3 %S. L’impact de l’ajout du concentré de sulfures au remblai cimenté en pâte a été évalué, et les résultats ont montré qu’il y a même une influence positive sur la résistance mécanique du remblai. Des essais de lixiviation sur le remblai en pâte ont démontré que le remblai contenant du concentré de sulfures à un comportement environnemental similaire au remblai fait avec les rejets totaux. Finalement, des travaux réalisés en laboratoire ont prouvé que le rejet désulfuré utilisé comme matériau de recouvrement permet de prévenir la production de DMA d’un parc à résidus générateur d’acide.
