Abstract
L’approche du cinéma américain de Bertrand Tavernier et Jean-Pierre Coursodon dans Cinquante ans de cinéma américain est assez originale : ces auteurs réécrivent ou complètent leurs articles dans chaque nouvelle édition de leur livre. Cette façon de procéder est utile pour prendre du recul sur un sujet qui a été beaucoup revu dans les magazines de cinéma français, notamment dans les années soixante. Les articles de Tavernier et Coursodon discutent et suppriment certains préjugés et rectifient certaines erreurs et imprécisions. Ils réfléchissent également aux critères de jugement. Néanmoins, chaque nouvelle vision d’un film révèle la précarité et les aléas du jugement. De telles variations conduisent à reconsidérer l’unité des films dans la mesure où les critiques choisissent des séquences ou des plans, pour leur étrangeté ou leur singularité. Au lieu de livrer une connaissance formelle de leur sujet, Tavernier et Coursodon se présentent comme des collectionneurs capables de changer d’avis et désireux d’exposer des films remarquables.
