Empruntant aux codes du badinage amoureux et de la tentation diabolique, Le diable amoureux de Jacques Cazotte se présente autant comme une comédie légère et fantastique que comme un un affolant drame moral pour le personnage d’Alvare. Un drame où la passion de servir de Béelzébuth ne paraît renvoyer en définitive qu’au seul désir d'Alvare de se faire obéir en tout, et ce pour mieux désobéir au propre désir de sa mère, la respectable dona Mencia. Mais si l’enfer du désir est d'abord opposé ici à l’enfer du devoir, c'est pour les voir mieux se rejoindre au bout du compte — diablerie oblige — en une serve passion où le démon n’apparaît jamais plus redoutable que lorsqu’il se fait le suppôt zélé de l’amour et de ses lois.
