Abstract
Cet article présente les tensions liées à la mise en oeuvre de l’Université fédérale du Sud de Bahia (UFSB) au Brésil de 2014 à 2019. Il situe d’abord le contexte international et sociopolitique national dans lequel s’inscrit la création de cette institution. Par la suite, une présentation de l’UFSB est étayée selon deux orientations au centre de son plan de développement institutionnel initial : une université populaire et une université pluriépistémique. Une analyse de données secondaires ancrée dans la perspective du néo-institutionnalisme sociologique a permis de dégager les tensions relatives à ces deux orientations, à partir d’écrits portant spécifiquement sur l’expérience de mise en oeuvre de l’UFSB. La discussion aborde les liens entre ces tensions et les tendances assaillant l’université à l’échelle globale afin de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des enjeux et défis auxquels est confrontée l’université du XXI e siècle.
