Abstract
L’étude de l’implantation et du développement de la Nouvelle-France (1608-1763) a donné lieu à de nombreux travaux historiques. Nous proposons ici d’ajouter à ces travaux un point de vue quelque peu différent. Nous croyons en effet que l’édification de la Nouvelle-France se fit aussi par la musique, avant tout par la musique religieuse, et plus précisément par la pratique du plain-chant. C’est dans cette pratique que nous croyons discerner certaines des principales assises de cette nouvelle société. La présente contribution relève quelques unes des caractéristiques de cette édification : après une période initiale où l’on dit plus que l’on ne chante, l’organisation des institutions religieuses reposera, entre autres, sur un chant abondamment pratiqué et enseigné, chant qui restera jusqu’au XXe siècle un des ciments les plus solides d’une société à part entière.
