Le 30 octobre 1940, six jours après la célèbre poignée de mains échangée à Montoire entre Hitler et Pétain, ce dernier annonçait : « J'entre aujourd'hui dans la voie de la Collaboration. » Mais qui avait intérêt à collaborer ? La France ou l'Occupant ? Et les occupants étaient-ils décidés à collaborer ? Jean-Pierre Azéma interroge toutes les formes de collaboration. Quels liens unissent la Révolution nationale et la Collaboration d'État ? Pétain a-t-il mené un double jeu ? Y a-t-il eu deux Vichy : le Vichy de Pétain et le Vichy de Laval ? Quels rôles ont joué Darlan et Weygand ? La collaboration des intellectuels fut-elle importante ? À Paris, comment les artistes, écrivains, acteurs, chanteurs, s'accommodaient-ils de la situation ? Pour qui la Collaboration fut-elle économiquement rentable : pour la France ? Pour le Reich ? Pour certains Français ? Jusqu'où est allée la collaboration militaire ? Quel rôle les ultras de la Collaboration ont-ils joué ? Ont-ils réussi à prendre le pouvoir vers la fin de l'Occupation ? La Collaboration d'État a-t-elle facilité la mise en œuvre de la Shoah ? Et comment, pendant ces quatre ans, l'opinion publique évolua-t-elle ? Enfin, à la Libération, l'Épuration fut-elle une œuvre de justice ou de revanche ? Et depuis, qu'en est-il des mémoires – celles des gaullistes, des communistes, des pétainistes, des collaborationnistes, et enfin celle des Juifs – qui ont suivi l'évolution des représentations de la Collaboration d'État et des collaborationnistes ? Sur toutes ces questions, Jean-Pierre Azéma, qui a enseigné de nombreuses années à l'Institut d'études politiques de Paris, tout en poursuivant ses recherches sur les années noires, ne souhaite ni excuser ni dénoncer : il cherche à comprendre, avec le souci constant d'éclairer les ambivalences des choix, des attitudes, des opinions et des mémoires.
