Les enfants savent très bien reconnaître les plantes avec lesquelles ils peuvent acquérir certaines compétences culturelles et exercer certaines de leurs capacités mentales. Quelques-unes de ces plantes, comme le bouton-d’or ou la pâquerette, font l’objet de traditions enfantines qui se transmettent de génération en génération lors des « écoles buissonnières », ces moments où les enfants s’affairent à inventer, loin du regard des adultes, des activités pédagogiques et ludiques construites sur la base des relations qu’ils entretiennent avec les êtres de l’écosystème ambiant. Le gain intellectuel potentiel que les plantes peuvent apporter à l’esprit humain ne peut être compris sans prendre en compte le rôle de la plante et sa manière de se révéler aux enfants. Pour être choisie, la plante doit réunir un ensemble de formes particulières qui répondent aux attentes de l’esprit de l’enfant et présagent le développement de compétences particulières. De sorte qu’il est possible de s’interroger sur la nature du lien interactif entre l’intelligence de la plante et celle de l’enfant tissé lors de ces expériences sensibles, en prenant comme définition commune de l’intelligence la capacité à communiquer des formes. Pour entamer cette réflexion, cet article propose de focaliser l’attention sur les profils ethnographiques et botaniques de quelques-unes de ces plantes avec lesquelles les enfants apprennent à compter, à parler, à écrire, à aimer, à méditer… que cela soit dans les écoles buissonnières de la France, au Maroc, en Inde ou ailleurs.
