Abstract
Algunos elementos relevantes utilizados por los arquitectos para integrar un medio natural en las ciudades son las fachadas y cubiertas vegetales, las cuales suelen ser consideradas como parte de la edificación desde su diseño, ya que al ser entes vivos presentan consideraciones que al construir con los materiales tradicionalmente utilizados no necesitan ser tomados en cuenta. Este artículo analiza, las ventajas y desventajas que ofrecen fachadas y cubiertas vegetales en parámetros sociológicos, medioambientales, funcionales, energéticos y de confort, a partir de la recopilación y análisis bibliográfico de la información disponible en artículos científicos, libros, revistas, periódicos y páginas web, etcétera.Los casos de estudio descritos permiten vislumbrar de mejor manera las consecuencias de la implantación de estos sistemas, así como los pasos que han dado en su camino a políticas exitosas, y el estado del desarrollo de estas. Se analizarán ciudades como Toronto y Copenhague, que han implementado con éxito sus políticas convirtiéndose en ejemplo en lo referente al desarrollo de infraestructuras verdes. Ciudades como Sídney, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo y Bogotá que se encuentran en diferentes estados en el avance hacia sus políticas.
