This paper develops a novel model predictive control (MPC) formulation for fixed wing aircraft with state and fault estimation. The primary contribution of this study is integrating an observer based method for simultaneous state and fault estimation with a standard MPC algorithm to accurately detect randomly occurring faults within the system inputs (actuators). The actuator faults are modeled as Loss Of Effectiveness (LOE). As this model predictive control algorithm is based on a delta-input formulation, the closed-loop system in both fault-free and fault conditions is stable, thus eliminating the need for the time consuming reconfiguration of the internal MPC model. The secondary contribution of this study is the application of this modified MPC scheme to detect actuator faults during flight control of fixed wing aircraft, verified through numerical simulations.
