Le but de cet article est de suivre la maturation progressive d’un texte multidimensionnel, en l’occurrence la chanson Le Déserteur de Boris Vian, écrite par Vian en février 1954 et mise en musique en collaboration avec Harold B. Berg. Seront analysées les deux versions de Boris Vian V1 et V2, qui se distinguent par leur fin –l’une violente, l’autre pacifiste–, et celle de Marcel Mouloudji VM, concomitante, qui s’avère ouvrir une dimension de sens radicalement nouvelle. En démêlant les faits et les mythes autour du Déserteur, nous relevons certains malentendus au niveau du texte et de la musique, mais aussi dans le(s) processus même de reprise et de réécriture. Parallèlement, l’histoire pré-éditoriale est prise en compte tout comme le contexte historique et celui des usages en musique populaire au moment de la création de la chanson, i.e. les années 1950.
