La différence entre une cure chamanique et une cure psychanalytique, écrivait Claude Lévi-Strauss en 1956, tient au fait que dans la première le médecin parle tandis que dans la seconde, ce soin est dévolu au patient. La différence vaut, dans la société awajun, entre pratiques ayahuasqueras passées et contemporaines. Avec les premières, le chamane « voyait » au-delà de l’opacité des corps et « racontait » les objets pathogènes et leur propriétaire, l’agression chamanique étant un prolongement des conflits entre groupes locaux et bassins fluviaux. Avec les secondes, le malade boit. À lui de « voir » et de « raconter » ; manière aussi pour le « chamane moderne » de ne pas prendre de risque dans un contexte social marqué par un imaginaire sorcellaire, introduit par les missions. Dans cet article, je présente et analyse les usages awajun (famille linguistique jivaro), traditionnels et nouveaux de l’ayahuasca, tels que j’ai pu les observer sur le Haut Marañón (Pérou) depuis une douzaine d’années. J’aborde les questions de l’apparition de nouvelles catégories de praticiens et de l’adaptation des rituels thérapeutiques aux maladies nouvelles ou considérées comme telles, ainsi que la façon dont le chamanisme awajun s’est modifié pour faire face au mépris dont il a été et est l’objet.
