Abstract
While the British were creating a strategy for 1777 that was fatally flawed, the Americans had their own issues. Major General Philip Schuyler and Major General Horatio Gates both vied for command of the Northern Department during the spring and early summer of 1777. As a result of this conflict, and the failure of General George Washington and Congress to resolve it, the American Northern Department’s readiness to face a British invasion from Canada was compromised, especially at Fort Ticonderoga. Congress would ultimately confirm Schuyler as the Northern Department’s commander. The chapter also discusses the frantic, but ultimately futile, American preparations at Fort Ticonderoga, due to both poor leadership and incompetence.
