View Video Presentation: https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2021-3442.vid Miniature satellites can offer significant cost savings as well as perform useful functions from low earth orbit. Propulsion on these miniature satellites can be used for orientation keeping, object avoidance, orbit raising, orbit keeping, and deorbiting. This allows more flexibility for the spacecraft as well as extends its useful lifetime. Hall effect thrusters are an attractive and efficient choice however, down-scaling such a system to fit on micro-satellites has certain challenges which have proven to be non-trivial. This paper will discuss the operation of Hall effect thrusters and emphasize the motivation for a micro-hall thruster simulation using krypton. Useful characteristics of plasma in a thruster via the numerical simulation (PIC) technique used will be discussed with the objective of developing a prototype.
