Les interventions archéologiques effectuées sur le site du fort d’en haut de Cartier et de Roberval, sur le promontoire de Cap-Rouge à Québec, ont permis la mise au jour d’une culture matérielle riche et diversifiée. Bien que les travaux de fouille ne soient pas encore complétés, le portrait de la vie des participants à la première tentative de colonisation des rives du Saint-Laurent commence déjà à émerger de l’étude préliminaire de la collection d’artefacts et d’écofacts : on perçoit la persistance de la stratification sociale des origines, la pratique de certains modes de subsistance, la présence d’échanges avec les autochtones ainsi que la réalisation de travaux d’évaluation des richesses naturelles du pays neuf. Un survol des éléments de culture matérielle témoignant de ces différents volets de la vie menée dans le fort Cartier-Roberval sera présenté, pour se poursuivre avec une discussion sur les thèmes de l’exploitation minière, de l’approvisionnement et de la stratification sociale.
