Cet article étudie la représentation de la mémoire, de la vérité et de l’archive dans La petite danseuse de quatorze ans (2017) de Camille Laurens, qui retrace la vie d’une adolescente à la fois inconnue et extrêmement célèbre, Marie Van Goethem, qui fut le modèle de Degas pour sa sculpture éponyme. L’oeuvre de Laurens, qui oscille entre l’essai et le récit biographique, contient une grande portée véritative et offre une exploration complexe de la mémoire. La mise en valeur de l’archive permet à Laurens de plonger dans ses propres souvenirs et d’interroger sa mémoire familiale afin de doter Marie Van Goethem d’un passé. À partir de la notion de « travail de mémoire » de Paul Ricoeur (La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli), cet article montre comment la démarche esth/éthique (Paul Audi, Créer) de Laurens se traduit notamment par un renversement de la perspective du rapport de l’artiste à son modèle, et par une valorisation du modèle qui redéfinit le rôle de la sculpture de Degas dans l’histoire de l’art.
