Abstract
Avec "the machine that changed the world", Womack et son équipe du MIT (Womack 1991) analysaient au début des années 90 le phénomène japonais dans l'industrie automobile. Ces deux dernières années, la Chine est devenue simultanément le premier marché et le premier producteur d'automobile. Une question fondamentale est de savoir s'il s'agit d'un nouveau modèle de production. La visite de 4 entreprises automobiles chinoises, tant locale qu'européenne, japonaise et européenne montre qu'il y a une grande variabilité de modèles qui coexistent en Chine et qu'il serait sans doute prématuré de parler de modèle de production nouveau. Les entreprises étrangères semblent installer en Chine des usines à très haut taux d'automatisation, assez conventionnelles par rapport aux modèles classiques, alors que les entreprises locales restent beaucoup plus utilisatrices de main d'oeuvres.
