Abstract
This study aims to understand a complex granular aquifer system contaminated by volatile \norganic compounds (VOCs) using environmental characterization data and numerical modeling. \nThe study site is located in the Valcartier region about 35 kilometres north of Québec City. In \n1997, trichloroethene (TCE) was discovered in the drinking water supply system of the \nVa1cartier Military Base. Many characterization phases followed to define the geological and \nhydrostratigraphic context. In December 2000, TCE was found in private wells in the \nneighbouring municipality of Shannon. An important characterization campaign was initiated to \ndefine more precisely the hydrogeological context and the groundwater TCE contamination in the \nsector. \nThe geology in the sector is characterized by the presence of two buried valleys in which fluvio- \nglacial, deltaic and prodeltaic, fluvial sediments are found. The main aquifer unit is deltaic sand \nand gravel with a maximum thickness of 45 m. In the eastern part of the site, a semi-confining \nsilt unit splits the deltaic sands into two separate aquifers with unconfined conditions above the \nsilt unit and semi-confined conditions beneath the silt. There are unconfined and semi-confined \nconditions at the site and groundwater flow is from north and south toward the center of the \nburied valley. A groundwater divide at the eastern part of the site diverts the groundwater flow \ntoward Val-Bélair to the east and toward Shannon to the west. \nAt the Valcartier site, multiple sources have produced a complex and heterogeneous TCE \ndissolved groundwater plume. The maximum TCE concentrations measured in the plume are \nabout 1400 µg/L to 4500 µg/L next to potential sources. The plume has an area of about 2 800 \n000 m² and a width of about 600 m at its western end. \nTo quantitatively represent groundwater flow and TCE migration, a numerical modelling study \nwas conducted using the FRAC3DVS numerical code. A 3D mesh composed of more than one \nmillion elements was generated to accurately represent the hydrostratigraphic system. The model \nwas composed of 19 hydraulic conductivity zones and was calibrated by adjusting the hydraulic \nconductivities and groundwater recharge. Partic1e tracking allowed the study of source zone \ncontributions and plume migration and also allowed the delineation of contributing areas of \ndrinking water wells in the sector. Finally, simplified mass transport simulations reproduced \ncorrectly the morphology of the regional groundwater TCE plume and allowed quantification of \nmigration time from the potential source zones.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
