Depuis quelques annees, la prothese maxillofaciale (PMF), jusqu'alors branche phare des matieres odontostomatologiques par sa specificite prothetique et son ancrage medicochirurgical, etend son domaine d'activites a de nombreuses disciplines. De nombreuses ouvertures s'offrent a present a la PMF : psychosociales (par la creation d'unites de prise en charge psychosociales), scientifiques (avec les progres en reconstitution et reconnaissance faciales), mais aussi culturelles de par son integration aux ecoles doctorales dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales. C'est a travers ce dernier volet que les auteurs, en s'interessant aux representations antiques du visage, souhaitent faire partager les resultats de leur recherche en anatomie artistique et en anthropologie culturelle. Ainsi, ils ont pu mettre en evidence l'existence de resonances socioculturelles a travers de nombreuses representations faciales allant, pour les plus anciennes, de l'Egypte antique, jusqu'aux aux icones chretiennes (coptes, byzantines et russes).
