French abstract: Cette these etudie comment une T.I., le format de presentation de l’information, influence le processus de selection d’un produit lors d’un cybermagasinage. L’objectif etait de developper et valider un modele base sur le modele du cognitif (Vessey 1991) et celui de la compatibilite entre les attributs des produits et la tâche (Nowlis et Simonson 1997). Le modele de recherche presente deux relations de ‘fit’ qui sont : a) le ‘fit’ entre la charge informationnelle de la tâche et le format de presentation de l’information et b) le ‘fit’ entre la charge informationnelle de la tâche, le format de l’information et les attributs des options. Ces relations de ‘fit’ sont definies selon la perspective du ‘fit’ en tant qu’appariement (matching) (Venkatraman 1989). Les variables independantes (le format de presentation de l’information, la charge informationnelle de la tâche et la superiorite de l’option) ont ete manipulees pour creer des conditions de ‘fit’ et de non ‘fit’. Cette experience a teste l’impact de ce ‘fit’ sur la facilite d’utilisation percue, l’effort cognitif percu, le temps de selection, l’entropie estimee et les renversements de preference. 600 consommateurs ont participe a l’experience au moyen d’Internet. Une analyse de protocole decisionnel a ete realisee aupres d’un sous-groupe de 39 sujets. En general, les resultats obtenus appuient les hypotheses posees. Pour les tâches de charge informationnelle elevee ou tres elevee, la facilite d’utilisation percue est plus elevee alors que l’effort cognitif percu, le temps de selection et l’entropie estimee sont plus faibles lorsque l’information est presentee en tableau qu’en pages Web individuelles. Pour une tâche de tres faible charge informationnelle, il n’y avait pas de difference de facilite d’utilisation percue ni d’effort percu entre les deux formats. Tel que prevu, pour des tâches de faible ou tres faible charge informationnelle, il n’y avait pas de difference d’entropie estimee ni de renversement de preference entre les deux formats de presentation de l’information. Lors des tâches de charge informationnelle elevee ou tres elevee, l’experience a permis de constater la presence d’un renversement de preference entre les deux formats mais de direction inverse a celui prevu dans les hypotheses basees sur le modele de Nowlis et Simonson (1994). L’analyse de protocole a permis de constater que les consommateurs adaptent leurs strategies decisionnelles au format de presentation de l’information et a la charge informationnelle. Les renversements de preferences inverses resultent de ces strategies decisionnelles et de l’attribut d’ancrage de la decision (Coupey 1994 et Tan et Benbasat 1993). English abstract: This dissertation examines how an I.T., the information presentation format, influences product selection while shopping online. The goal was to develop and validate a research model based on the cognitive fit model (Vessey 1991) and the attribute-task compatibility model (Nowlis and Simonson 1997). The research model offers two fit relationships: a) fit between the task information load and the information presentation format and b) fit between the task information load, the information presentation format and the product’s attributes. These fit relationships are defined as fit as matching (Venkatraman 1989). The independent variables (information presentation format, task information load and alternative superiority) were manipulated to create conditions of fit or lack of fit. An experiment tested the impact of this fit on perceived ease of use, perceived cognitive effort, selection time, estimated entropy and preference reversals. 600 consumers participated online. A sub-sample of 39 consumers took part in protocol analysis. The results support most hypotheses. For high or very high information load tasks, when the information was presented in a table format compared to when presented on separate web-pages, perceived ease of use was higher while perceived effort, selection time and estimated entropy were lower. As hypothesized, for the very low information load, there was no difference in perceived ease of use, perceived cognitive effort between the two formats. As well, for low or very low information load tasks, the estimated entropy was the same and there was no preference reversal between the two formats. However, for high and very high information load conditions, preference reversals occurred between the two formats but in the opposite direction than predicted in the hypotheses based on Nowlis and Simonson 1997. The protocol analysis showed that consumers adapted their decision strategies to the information presentation format and information load. The preference reversals resulted from the information strategies and decision anchor attribute (Coupey 1994, Tan and Benbasat 1993).
