Abstract
Dans la première étape d’une étude sur la formation du prolétariat rural au Bas-Canada au début du XIXe siècle, cette note de recherche propose d’évaluer le nombre et la proportion de journaliers et de journalières parmi les chefs de famille des localités du district de Montréal à partir du recensement de 1831. Nous tenterons aussi de préciser certaines des caractéristiques sociales de ce prolétariat rural à partir des rubriques de ce recensement. Cependant, les recenseurs emploient des méthodes assez différenciées les unes des autres pour relever les informations prévues dans le questionnaire officiel. Nous devons donc tenir compte de ces variations du travail des recenseurs pour évaluer le nombre et pour déterminer le profil de ce prolétariat rural.
