Spinal cord injury in dogs: a review of 45 cases

Abstract
Spinal cord injury may cause a range of symptoms from neck or back pain to complete paralysis and loss of autonomic function i.e., bowel and bladder control. The present study included a total of 45 clinical cases of spinal cord injury brought to the Referral Veterinary Polyclinic IVRI Izatnagar during a period of one and a half year. Diagnosis was based on history, physical examination, neurological examination and radiographic evaluation. The study yielded occurrence trend of spinal cord injury in canine patients. Most of the cases of spinal cord injury brought were paraplegic animals in the age group of 1–5 yr. Male animals of Labrador retriever and German shepherd breeds and mongrels with body weight of 10–30 kg were frequently injured in motor vehicular accidents and brought for treatment within 15 days of spinal cord injury.
