Abstract
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) represents a grouping of open economies that depend critically on foreign trade and investment flows. The ASEAN countries-Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand-owe their progress mainly to the multilateral trading system, which has provided them access to the markets of developed countries. Judging by the trilateral trade pattern, each of the three member countries will benefit significantly from NAFTA. Primary Canadian exports to the United States include wood products, paper products, and nonferrous metals. The distribution of dynamic gains is also likely to follow a pattern similar to that of static gains, with Mexico benefiting more than Canada or the United States. Electrical and electronic products rank high among exports that are likely to be diverted from ASEAN to Mexico in the US market, since these products are of export interest to both ASEAN and Mexico.
