El presente articulo busca contribuir a la reflexion sobre el sentido de laprofesionalizacion para los pueblos indigenas. Se presenta el caso de losmazatecos de la Region Canada del Estado de Oaxaca, Mexico, para mostrarcuales son algunas de las expectativas que tienen con respecto a convertirse enprofesionistas, de alguna manera, empoderados por ser especialistas en algunade las areas del conocimiento academico. En este sentido, se destaca que elacceder a la universidad convencional configuro entre los jovenes mazatecosdistintos procesos de resignificacion. Ademas, este acceso sirvio para crearalgunas transformaciones sociales al interior de sus comunidades. Por otrolado, se muestra el como y para que estan regresando los profesionistasmazatecos a sus comunidades de origen y si su profesionalizacion forma parte ono de un proyecto colectivo, con lo cual las comunidades mazatecas focalizanuna mirada critica sobre sus profesionistas
