Abstract
James Gale(1863~1937), a Canadian Missionary, worked in Korea for 40 years(1888~1927). Gale was a missionary, pastor, and theologian as well as a distinguished scholar in the area of Korean studies. Gale arrived in Korea in 1888 when Cholera widely spread out. Even though it was an unstable and unpredictable atmosphere, Gale lived as a sincere man of God and a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. He respected the history and culture of Korea and continually introduced them to the world. The purpose of this article is to explore the earlier years of Gale in Busan and Gongdangol(1889~1892) to perceive how they influenced the life and work of James Gale for 40 years in Korea. For this purpose, we will examine his unforgettable memories of three missionaries, Henry Davies(1856~1890), John Heron(1856~1890), and Harriet Heron(1860~1908).
