Dalla rivolta della Mecca nel 1979 alla seconda guerra del Golfo, dalle minacce nucleari del regime iraniano all'escalation di terrore di Al-Qaida, la storia recente del mondo islamico è pervasa da innumerevoli correnti di pensiero rivolte a un'imminente apocalisse, capaci di influenzare stili di vita e determinare orientamenti politici.Forme diffuse di propaganda rielaborano motivi della tradizione coranica intrecciandoli con figure e temi estranei all'immaginario islamico: l'Anticristo e il Mahdi, l'Armageddon, l'Apocalisse cristiana, l'antisemitismo dei Protocolli dei Savi di Sion, le profezie di Nostradamus, i dischi volanti del Triangolo delle Bermude.Jean-Pierre Filiu propone la prima analisi documentata sull'origine e l'evoluzione delle tematiche millenariste ed escatologiche nel mondo islamico contemporaneo, dal Canada al Sud-est asiatico, individuandone i codici e le connessioni più nascoste.Se “le credenze di un popolo riguardo alla fine del mondo riflettono il suo punto di vista sul presente”, i profeti islamici dell'apocalisse rappresentano una dimensione socio-politica della massima serietà.
