Le 10 mai 1996, plusieurs expéditions tentaient d’atteindre le sommet de l’Everest quand une violente tempête est survenue, entraînant un bilan humain particulièrement lourd (12 décès). Après avoir circonscrit l’analyse à deux expéditions commerciales nord-américaines, puis justifié le recours à une perspective d’analyse systémique, il a été possible de relater l’enchevêtrement des facteurs s’étant conjugués et ayant contribué à la vulnérabilité de ces expéditions. L’aléa météorologique s’est en effet combiné à des contextes organisationnels spécifiques, fruits de multiples décisions qui ont initié la séquence accidentelle, puis altéré la gestion de la crise. Il apparaît notamment qu’au sein des expéditions, des objectifs divergents, parfois contradictoires avec la sécurité des ascensionnistes, étaient poursuivis ; par ailleurs, certains accords et règles n’ont pas été scrupuleusement rappelés et respectés ; l’hétérogénéité des niveaux techniques et de l’expérience de la très haute montagne est également en cause, tout comme est perceptible une forme de banalisation des dangers inhérents à la fréquentation de l’Everest. Le choix de développer une approche systémique du drame semble pertinent : du fait de l’interdépendance entre des micro-événements a priori mineurs et déconnectés, la catastrophe est devenue au fil des heures de moins en moins évitable.
