Cet article explore les notions de temporalité qui se dégagent de l’étude ethnographique de la sculpture rituelle sur bois chez les Guna du Panama. S’appuyant sur le concept de « cartes du temps » d’Alfred Gell, il montre que la sculpture sur bois des Guna est un outil de navigation temporelle qui permet d’accéder à de multiples images du temps grâce aux qualités de ces artefacts qui acquièrent un sens à travers les relations intersubjectives. Les figures rituelles en bois donnent accès à l’action différée du temps d’origine en établissant une synchronisation avec le temps biographique humain et avec le temps des esprits qui en sont les propriétaires. La sculpture sur bois doit donc être considérée comme un processus matériel qui s’engage récursivement à la fois dans la connaissance historique et l’expérience vécue, les rendant mutuellement significatives, jetant ainsi un pont entre les processus individuels et collectifs variant avec le temps.
