Abstract
This is a book review of the title 'David Hume's Political Theory: Law, Commerce, and the Constitution of Government', N. McArthur, ISBN: 978-0802093356, published by University of Toronto Press, 2007. Hume is presented here as ‘a precautionary conservative’, which is nearer to being a liberal and a reformer than he is commonly thought to have been. McArthur writes: ‘It has been the task of this book to explain the standards Hume uses for judging certain governments to be better or worse than others, and how these standards are grounded in his philosophy as a whole’ (p. 135).
