L’étude a été menée dans les écoles de langue française de l’Ontario auprès d’élèves dont les uns avaient quitté l’école, d’autres étaient revenus aux études et d’autres encore étaient considérés comme « à risque ». Elle fait ressortir l’importance de traiter la question de l’abandon scolaire dans une perspective multifactorielle et multidimensionnelle. C’est à partir de l’analyse de l’un de ces facteurs – celui des attentes et des aspirations des jeunes – qu’ils se penchent sur le portrait que se font les jeunes de leur avenir. Ce portrait varie-t-il selon que les jeunes ont abandonné l’école sans obtenir leur diplôme de fin d’études, qu’ils ont choisi de retourner sur les bancs de l’école ou qu’ils sont à risque de décocher? C’est l’une des questions auxquelles cet article tente de répondre. Les résultats illustrent la complexité de la question dans le parcours des jeunes, mais font également valoir certaines convergences entre les catégories de jeunes, notamment l’importance de l’obtention du diplôme d’études secondaires.
