Durante su vida, Mario Molina no rehuyó participar en instituciones y campañas destinadas a conseguir regulaciones y leyes que buscaban garantizar un medio ambiente sano. Molina participó desde el Consejo Universitario de la UNAM hasta las negociaciones para alcanzar el Protocolo de Montreal. Contribuyó a: definir la justicia en materia de normas sobre calidad del aire mediante control vehicular y coordinación metropolitana, elaborar leyes e instituciones encargadas de enfrentar el cambio climático, así como comprender la transmisión por aerosoles de la covid19. Durante sus intervenciones públicas en los medios, Molina buscaba que no se le asociara a un partido político o ideología, pero no dudaba en criticar decisiones de autoridades y empresas que carecían de una base de evidencia científica. Molina fundó y presidió en México, desde 2004, el Centro Mario Molina, institución de investigación y promoción de políticas públicas. Desde éste think tank o grupo de expertos se realizaron estudios estratégicos sobre calidad del aire, energías renovables y cambio climático que transformaron la justicia ambiental en el país.
