En analysant Youth (Feng Xiaogang, 2017), film sorti il n’y a pas longtemps, et son extraordinaire popularité en Chine, cet article entend se pencher sur les débats actuels concernant le rôle du cinéma en évoquant la nostalgie à travers la référence continuelle au passé national. Dérivé du roman semi-biographique You Touched Me du romancier chinois basé aux États-Unis Yan Geling, le film fournit à la fois une source et une réinvention de la mémoire collective du passé révolutionnaire et socialiste. La popularité de Youth réside dans le sentiment nostalgique qu’il crée non seulement pour les téléspectateurs qui ont vécu dans cette période historique spécifique, mais aussi pour ceux qui ont une image imagée du passé historique. Le mélodrame « pleurant » puissant trouve une expression séduisante dans des objets nostalgiques, tels que le style vestimentaire symbolique, la décoration intérieure avec des caractéristiques historiques et l’utilisation combinée de la musique « rouge classique » et des chansons populaires, qui fonctionnent pour construire l’authenticité perçue de la période.
