Patrick Lacroix, an independent scholar from Canada, has offered an in-depth analysis of “the intersection of religion and politics in the era of Kennedy’s presidency” (p. 2), which, he contends, has been largely missing from studies of U.S. public policy as well as presidential and religious histories of the period. The result is a comprehensive consideration of the literature as well as a presentation of significant archival research. Among the strong suits of this book, the author makes many important distinctions regarding religions, denominations, and theological perspectives which are often overlooked in purely historical or political analyses. He offers a deserved revisiting of the earlier analyses of the period provided by Harvey Cox, Robert N. Bellah, and Lawrence Fuchs, as well as recognition of both older and more recent scholars of the 1960 election and JFK administration, and provides appropriate critiques of the same.
