Le présent article propose l’examen des conduites adoptées par de jeunes élèves de la troisième année du primaire dans la résolution de problèmes de multiplication simples, avant même que son enseignement ne débute en classe. Soumis à des tâches où entre en jeu un opérateur multiplicatif, ces élèves ont recours à des procédés nombreux et variés qui témoignent de l’existence de différents modèles de représentation des relations multiplicatives, soit les modèles additif, mixte et multiplicatif. Ces modèles prennent appui sur des connaissances acquises dans le cadre d’activités antérieures relatives à la numération et aux structures additives. L’examen de quelques conduites de sujets met en évidence les actions et les verbalisations utilisées pour illustrer les modèles identifiés. Cette recherche tire profit des théories et études piagétiennes, des concepts féconds de la psychologie sociale, de même que des travaux en didactique des mathématiques, pour interpréter les construits mathématiques des sujets et suggérer des pistes d’action pour l’enseignement.
