Abstract
L’immersion est un mode d’apprentissage d’une langue seconde dont la popularité est croissante. Mais encore faut-il s’assurer que la maîtrise de cette langue seconde ne s’acquiert pas aux dépens d’une compétence véritable dans les autres matières scolaires, dont les mathématiques. C’est pour répondre à de telles inquiétudes en dépassant les habituelles mesures de rendement scolaire que cette étude sur la compréhension de trois concepts mathématiques – point, distance et cercle – a été menée. Elle permet de constater, d’une part, qu’il est possible de décrire et d’évaluer de façon opérationnelle la compréhension de concepts mathématiques et, d’autre part, que la compréhension des trois concepts élaborés par les élèves anglophones d’un programme d’immersion française s’avère, sinon parfaite, du moins suffisante pour reconnaître la qualité et la valeur des apprentissages réalisés.
