Denis Lambin (1519-1572) offre un parcours intéressant, et la méthode qu’il élabore patiemment, au service d’éditions très réputées, n’est pas sans rappeler les revendications actuelles des tenants de la Slow Science. Issu d’un milieu artisan, il connaît plusieurs périodes de formation en France et en Italie, aux cours desquelles il développe un large et précieux réseau, avant de devenir « lecteur royal » à Paris – à plus de 40 ans. Ses célèbres éditions (Horace, Cicéron, Lucrèce…) datent toutes des dix dernières années de sa vie et sont le fruit du travail patient d’un philologue soucieux d’offrir à ses étudiants et à ses lecteurs – quitte à « lambiner » – le meilleur du savoir de son temps.
