This paper describes descriptive research conducted in the libraries of 24 public schools in 3 Brazilian cities, with the aim of analyzing and understanding possible contributions of the school libraries to students' Brazil-Reading Test results. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using observation and survey techniques. Results suggested that it was not possible to establish a relationship between the quality of the libraries and students' outcomes, since it was found that most of the school libraries did not even meet basic requirements.
