Cet article étudie le développement de la compréhension d’un sens particulier des opérations d’addition et de soustraction. Nous nous sommes intéressée plus particulièrement aux problèmes de comparaison. La méthode utilisée privilégie un échange entre une adulte et une enfant. Cette discussion a permis de déterminer comment évoluent les représentations mentales, les procédures et les réflexions de trois enfants de 9 ans. Ces enfants ont été reconnues comme étant en difficulté d’apprentissage en mathématiques par leur enseignante. Cette étude nous permet d’améliorer notre compréhension du phénomène de l’apprentissage chez des élèves qui éprouvent des difficultés. Le cas échéant, elle permet de donner les balises d’un accompagnement qui faciliterait le développement de la compréhension pour ce type de problèmes.
