La pédagogie a une fantastique histoire. Celle de la question qui l’a fait naître et qui l’habite depuis 2 500 ans : Comment favoriser et améliorer la création de l’homme par lui-même? L’auteure tente de déceler à partir de sa recherche en pédagogie et en sciences de l’éducation ce qu’est aujourd’hui la substance de la pédagogie, son statut, son champ spécifique, l’originalité de sa recherche et son lien avec la question des finalités de l’éducation. Elle soutient la thèse que la recherche pédagogique devrait pouvoir, aujourd’hui, être reconnue comme discipline contributive des sciences de l’éducation. Pour que ses apports puissent mieux contribuer à la production des savoirs émanant de la recherche en éducation. Elle soutient cette thèse en s’appuyant sur les définitions données actuellement à la pédagogie dans le monde de la recherche en éducation, et en faisant aussi quelques incursions dans l’histoire permettant de mieux comprendre le manque de légitimité dont souffrent aujourd’hui les pédagogues. La pédagogie est ici définie comme une lente élaboration d’une théorie de l’action éducative quand celle-ci se veut science des moyens articulée à une fin éducative qui ne dicte pas ses moyens mais au contraire exige inventivité et création.
