Cet article décrit dans quel état se trouvait l’enseignement de l’arithmétique dans les petites écoles du Bas-Canada au début du 19e siècle, avant même que ne commence vraiment la mise en place de l’enseignement primaire. Sont ainsi retracées les origines catéchistiques et marchandes ainsi que les méthodes en usage d’un savoir appelé à constituer la base de la mathématique aujourd’hui véhiculée dans nos écoles. En sachant ce qu’on enseignait et comment on l’enseignait au point de départ, on comprendra sans doute mieux tous les efforts d’invention que l’école a été obligée de fournir pour arriver aux pratiques modernes.
