Cet article traite de la problématique de l’accès des filles et des femmes aux études supérieures à l’Université d’Ottawa depuis la remise du premier diplôme à une femme en 1920. Mais pour pouvoir faire une comparaison homme-femme, les auteures analysent en profondeur des données récentes dans deux domaines : l’un est traditionnellement masculin et l’autre, traditionnellement féminin. La motivation des auteures repose sur l’hypothèse selon laquelle la situation des femmes professeures et étudiantes s’est beaucoup améliorée depuis 1987, date à laquelle l’Université d’Ottawa a adopté un énoncé de mission dans laquelle elle s’engageait à continuer à jouer un rôle déterminant dans la promotion des femmes dans tous les domaines de la vie universitaire. Les auteures ont donc tenté d’évaluer les différences homme-femme en ce qui concerne : 1) l’inscription; 2) le statut à temps partiel et à plein temps; 3) les programmes de premier, deuxième et troisième cycles; 4) l’embauche; 5) le rang professoral; 6) le salaire et 7) l’adhésion à la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales. Il ressort des données recueillies que les étudiantes et les professeures continuent de se faire prendre dans une sorte d’« entonnoir académique ».
