Abstract
Afin d’assurer le confort des visiteurs attendus à Montréal pour l’Expo 67, les ingénieurs responsables proposent de vaporiser du DDT sur les berges du Saint-Laurent, près du site. Il s’agit d’empêcher les éphémères de causer des désagréments lorsqu’ils se déplacent en masse au printemps et au début de l’été. D’autres expositions, comme Lausanne, utilisent le DDT à cette fin. Les ingénieurs montréalais pensaient obtenir les autorisations sans problème, mais ils essuient un refus des autorités provinciales. L’histoire de ce refus se confond avec l’émergence de la sensibilité écologique, car au moment même où l’aménagement du site commence, un débat s’ouvre à la Chambre des Communes qui mènera à l’interdiction du DDT. Dans cet article, qui exploite les archives de l’Expo, il s’agit de montrer qu’une sensibilité à l’écologie arrive à maturation. L’affaire est d’autant plus intéressante que les insectes incriminés sont inoffensifs.
